Xmas family ski holiday to St Lary in France for 7 nights staying in 5 star rated accommodation plus car hire
Whether you are new to Xmas holidays in the snow or a seasoned pro, one thing is for sure the anxiety levels will be ramping up as the days tick ever closer and the snow forecasts are touch and go! Will the precipitation fall as glorious snow or wet soggy dream crushing rain?? We feel your pain but it is all part and parcel of skiing at this festive time of year and makes the 'year of the dump' (whenever she shall grace us lol) even more special! Choosing a resort that has a bit of height to it is the most important aspect to booking your holiday in the snow. At this time of year an extra 100 metres of height can literally make all the difference!
Saint Lary is nestled in the middle of the French Pyrenees and is approx 1 hour 30 minutes from Toulouse airport and 30 minutes from the Spanish border. The village itself is set at 865 metres and is a beautiful place especially when covered in snow. At this time of year the village is less likely to be snow bound, however I was there two years ago and there was over a foot of snow in the village itself. Conversely last Xmas was totally different and the snow line was up at 1900. Again the importance of a resort with height is key! St Lary has levels up at 1700 - 1900 and 2500 metres giving you a good shot at seeing the white stuff during Christmas. You can keep up to date with the latest resort webcam to see just how white your Xmas will be! and make sure to check out snowforecast.com for a comprehensive forecast.
Up on the slopes
The St Lary ski area is one of the largest in the Pyrenees and offers up to 100km of ski pistes! With over 250 snow cannons dotted around the area, if it's cold enough the machines will produce more than enough snow to ski on. Up on the slopes you will find 9 black runs, 14 red runs, 26 blue runs, 7 green runs, 1 snowpark, half-pipe, kid's snow garden, 31 ski lifts made up of 1 gondola, 1 cable-car, 18 ski-tows and 11 chair lifts.

Here's a snapshot of what's on offer

"This was the second time we've stayed at Les Chardons (the downstairs apartment) for a skiing holiday. Vignec is a beautiful village near to Saint Lary. You can walk between the two but we leave all the skis in the car and drive the short distance to the new telecabine each day. The apartment is spacious compared to most modern purpose built places and perfect for a family with two children. Ours are aged 10 and 8 and loved their bunk beds. There's a well equipped kitchen, a proper dining table and chairs as well as a sofa and TV area. Sheets, towels etc are provided.
M & Mme Escalonna (Nicole and Bernard), the owners are really kind, helpful and welcoming (thanks for the pyrenees cake and the jam!). Although they don't speak much English they are extremely patient with our French and their son has helped translate in the past if there has been anything complicated. While you're there they leave you alone but you know they are just nearby if you need anything.
One of the best features of the apartment is the wood burning stove. It is fantastic. Bernard fills up the wood store with more than enough wood for the week for 20 Euros and for that you can light the fire when you get back every evening and with the thick stone walls it keeps the place really toasty. The wifi connection works well and there always seems to be plenty of hot water. At the end of the stay you just pay for any firewood and the electricity bill before leaving. I would recommend this place to a family with two young kids (or older ones that can share a room). Mind you I would love to stay here some time without the kids and check out a few more of the local restaurants in the evenings." Read more
