Taipei City is the capital city of Taiwan, it is situated on the northern tip of Taiwan 16 miles southwest of the port city of Keelung. The city has a population of nearly 2.75 million inhabitants and was founded in the early 18th century by Chinese immigrants. Since the 19th century the city grew quickly fueled by international trade. Today Taipei City is seen as the economic, political and cultural centre of Taiwan with major multinational high-tech industries, high speed rail, two airports and railway lines radiating out to other parts of the island. The memorial hall is used for national celebrations with the nation’s flag being raised here each morning. The world’s second tallest skyscraper Taipei 101 at 508 metres high is found here in the Xinyi District and affords unrivalled views over the city landscape and to the distant hills. It also boasts the second fastest elevators in the world that whisks tourists up to the 89th floor in a mere 37 seconds. Other buildings worth visiting include the National Concert Hall, the highly rated 5 star Grand Hotel near Yuanshan rated as one of the world’s finest back in 1968, The National Palace Museum, The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall constructed in found memory of Dr.Sun Yat–sen the founding father figure of the Republic of China and the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines.
There are plenty of green parks to break up the urban sprawl including Daan Forest Park, the beautiful Taipei Botanical Garden with its lotus ponds a place of real tranquility, 228 Peace Park where you can watch senior citizens taking part in chess and taichi. Located on the south bank of the Keelung River is the 12km long Dajia Riverside Park and only 10 minutes’ walkfrom Zhishan Metro Station is the picturesque Zhishan Gardens with several important shrines and temples. Taipei has many famous temples well worth viewing on any trip to the city including the most popular ones Longshan Temple, Baoan Temple which was constructed in 1805 and is considered one of the leading religious sites having won many acclaims, the nearby Confucius temple and the Xingtian Temple are also worth seeing. There is very little left of the city’s ancient architecture but four of Taipei’s five original city gates still stand proud and certainly worth seeking out. The benefits of hot springs is well known around the world and Taipei has three main areas to relax and enjoy the health benefits , they are located at Wulai, Beitou and the Yangmingshan National Park which is great for hiking with dozens of well-marked trails for the enthusiasts to follow.
Taipei is a shopper’s city with world class shopping malls with all the famous brands being well represented here. The citys main shopping area is neatly divided into two districts, West and East, West Taipei with its old narrow streets crammed with small shops and East Taipei with its wide tree lined boulevards and large shopping malls.
