About Hoi an
Located in the Quang Nam Province in Vietnam is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hoi An, this atmospheric town was once a major port and boasts a captivating riverside setting and grand architecture. In its early beginnings back in the 1st century it possessed the largest harbour area in Southeast Asia and flourished between the 7th and 10th centuries when the port controlled the spice trade which resulted in great prosperity for the area. This ancient town of 120,000 inhabitants is exceptionally well preserved with parts of the port area dating back to the 15th century; the influences of foreign intervention mainly Japanese, Chinese and European along with its indigenous people have combined over the centuries to create this unique heritage site which is one of Vietnam’s major tourist destinations with a real cosmopolitan atmosphere.
With the increase in popularity of the town has come increased wealth once again making Hoi An one of Vietnam’s richest towns. This wonderful ancient town is one of the world’s most intriguing destinations with parts of the Old Town full of ancient teahouses, Chinese temples and wavering Japanese merchant houses. You will also find four museums which showcase the history of Hoi An and the surrounding area, The Museum of History and Culture is a fine example of what’s on offer, formerly a 17th century pagoda you will find it located next to the Quan Cong temple.
There are over 1,000 timber framed buildings with wooden or brick walls, fine architectural monuments, cult houses and many temples and shrines. The houses show fine examples of carved traditional motifs on the exterior and they are tightly arranged in unbroken rows along the ancient narrow walkways. The front of the buildings allows easy access from the walkways with the backs conveniently opening up onto the waterway, the lifeblood of the town as an ancient trading port. Seek out the fine example of an 18th century Japanese influenced wooden bridge complete with its own pagoda; it is a truly remarkable place of great interest, culture and history. The riverside takes on a surreal atmosphere at night when it is lit up with hundreds of old-style lanterns which makes for wonderful photographic experiences.
Some of the great attractions to see in the area include the memorable My Son Santury, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right; these Hindu-themed ruins were constructed by the ancient civilization known as the Champa who occupied this area for 15 centuries. The temple complex survived considerable bombing during the Vietnam War and still retains many fine examples of towers, intricate stone sculptures and temples in a jungle setting which reminds many visitors of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat complex.
Shopping here is a wonderful experience with two distinct shopping areas, downtown and the Riverside market, here you will find some of the lowest cost suits and silk shirts and with little bartering skills prices can be even lower ensuring some fantastic bargains to be had. Along the riverside you will find many reasonably priced restaurants offering some wonderful local cuisine so it’s a great place to eat in one of the world’s most appealing and unforgettable surroundings.
